The 2001 elk restoration project in North Carolina was a significant effort to reintroduce the elk to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The project involved the release of 52 elk from Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in western Kentucky and Elk Island National Park in Alberta, Canada, into Cataloochee Valley. This initiative was part of an experimental release to assess the elk's ability to survive and reproduce in the region. The project was a collaborative effort involving the National Park Service, conservation groups, and local communities. The elk herd has since expanded beyond Cataloochee Valley, with sightings reported in areas like Cherokee, Balsam Mountain, Maggie Valley, and Waynesville. The project has been a success story in wildlife restoration, with the elk population thriving and contributing to the local economy and culture.
